N.E. Spiritual Ensemble Concert

Boston’s New England Spiritual Ensemble in Concert October 20

BERLIN – The New England Spiritual Ensemble, one of America’s finest interpreters of traditional Negro spirituals, will present a concert at 4 p.m. on Sunday, October 20.   Based in Boston, the Ensemble is comprised of ten classically-trained vocalists whose individual credits range from guest appearances with symphony orchestras to feature performances at jazz festivals.  The New England Spiritual Ensemble is devoted to “preserving the art and tradition of Negro spirituals” and is modeled after the classically-trained Fisk Jubilee Singers who, in the late nineteenth century, enthralled Europe with their renditions of spirituals.
The concert will take place in the state-of-the art sanctuary of Bethany Covenant Church, 785 Mill St. (Route 372) in Berlin, and will open the season of the annual Bethany Music Series.

The Ensemble has been heard nationally on CBS Sunday Morning, National Public Radio’s Performance Today, is the subject of several public television features and has toured nationally and internationally. Their recording titled Comin’ Up Shouting features the arrangements of spirituals and works of John Andrew Ross.  You will be inspired by this uniquely American music of hope and triumph.

A reception will follow. All concerts in the Bethany Music Series are open to the public and tickets are not required. Child care is provided and a free-will offering is received.
