Relay For Life Underway

Hundreds walking to raise funds for American Cancer Society.

10 a.m. Participants began walking preceding the opening ceremonies.

12:30 Opening ceremonies features a short talk and congratulations from Mayor Adam Salina. The Relay is officially open. 

Most of the teams are selling items, from bracelets to jewelry to flowers. All of the proceeds will go to the American Cancer Society.

2 p.m. Sun has made its way out and is shining on the Relay. Temperatures are soaring and walkers have stripped down to shorts and Relay shirts. The sun is a welcome site for all walkers after a week of rain. 

2 p.m. Juice Box performs and keeps the walkers invigorated.

3:45 p.m. Team lap a huge success and most teams have representatives and some teams are complete for the lap.

4 p.m. Survivors lap take place and survivor dinner are well-attended.

5 p.m. Downpour clears many of the walkers off the track and looking for cover. Dozens of younger walkers revel in the rain, however, and never stop. 

7:15 Avenue Groove takes the stage and grooves the audience with its string of R&B hits. 

8 p.m Pretty sure the world isn't coming to an end, was sweating it out for a while with some of the angry clouds. 

9 p.m. Luminaria ceremony takes place as Relay team members walk the track with lit candles to remember, celebrate and fight back against cancer. Mrs. Terlecky, music educator at McGee conducts two choruses during the ceremony. The procession is led by a bagpiper playing "Amazing Grace."

10:15. Father Michael from St. Paul Church conducts a church service for the Relayers. 

11 p.m. Toy Story 3 begins with the children watching on the blacktop. The pack has certainly thinned out after luminaria and the walking track has just a few people walking.
