FOBAC to Host Bazaar, Bake Sale

Money will help defray costs of helping with animal adoption.

The Friends of Berlin Animal Control is hosting its annual Bazaar and Bake Sale on Saturday, November 19. Mary Blier, the president and volunteer of the organization for four years is hosting the fundraising event.

The organization is going on its 10th year as an adoption agency for cats, dogs, and other animals in Berlin and the surrounding towns. FOBAC is a rescue group that works with the Animal Control Facility in Berlin.

“We get homes for cats and dogs, we have an adoption coordinator,” says Blier, “We advertise the animals on our website for those who want to adopt. There is a veterinarian who takes care of the animals, neuters them, and they are given shots before they are adopted.”

The organization charges an adoption fee for every animal, but all of the money goes right back into helping more animals. All of the staff are volunteers, “not one of us get paid a cent,” says Blier.

They have mostly kittens and cats, and often times families choose to be foster parents for the animals before they are adopted.

Given the nature of the organization, as a non-profit, they do not have an office to work from. “We would like to get our own building where we can house the animals,” continues Blier, “We would like to see no more homeless animals. If we get an animal from Berlin, they are sent to the Berlin Animal Control, where they are kept until they are adopted.”

At the bazaar they will be selling baked goods and pet supplies such as toys and leashes. The event is being held at the Kensington Moose Lodge on 400 Farmington Avenue from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will also be raffle prizes, although not all of the prizes will be pet supplies.

“There is a very high adoption rate,” says Blier. "Thus far, the bazaar has been highly successful, especially since it is one week before thanksgiving."
