Dedicated Volunteer Honored With 2012 Sandra C. Labaree Award

Annie Salgado the recipient of the 2012 Sandra C. Labaree Volunteer Values Award in Connecticut.

Annie Salgado of Berlin was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma at the age of 19, and is now a 20-plus year survivor. She began her involvement with the American Cancer Society in 2001 when she formed a team for the Relay For Life of Rocky Hill, even though she didn’t live in Rocky Hill. She helped found the Relay For Life of Berlin in 2008, and served as chair of the event in 2008 and 2009, and survivor chair in 2010 and 2011. She has helped raise over $280,000 for the Berlin Relay! But it doesn’t stop there.

Annie wanted to do more than just raise money. She is a cosmetologist, so when her development staff partner spoke about the Look Good…Feel Better program at one of her Relay committee meetings, Annie jumped at the chance to get involved. She has been a volunteer cosmetologist with the program for two years now.

"Her sense of humor and energy lights up the room as she assists women with their make-up. She is definitely a ball of sunshine!  She exudes the Society’s mission of creating a world with less cancer and more birthdays," says Juana Adams, the ACS staffer who nominated her for the award.
