Berlin teams go 2-1 in state tournament action.

 

SOFTBALL

Berlin 2, Bunnell 0

The Redcoats scored two runs in the fifth inning and winning pitcher Makayla Harris made it stand up, throwing a shutout. The win allowed Berlin to move on to the second round where it will play at Brookfield High School Wednesday.

The first run came on a Bunnell error. Kelly Walsh then reached on a single, stole second and scored on a Brittany Labbadia single

Harris allowed just two hits and struck out four.

"We played an excellent game overall with some terrific defense and pitching," Berlin coach Jason Pires said. "We did enough with the bats to move on to the next round and that's what is most important."

The game at Brookfield will begin at 4 p.m. Wednesday.

BASEBALL

CLASS L FIRST ROUND

Berlin 5, Wilcox Tech 0

Senior pitcher Tim Norton took a no-hitter into the seventh inning before giving up a single with one out in the seventh and finished with a one-hitter.

The Redcoats will now travel to 21st seed Sheehan in Wallingford Wednesday in the second round.

Class L was the upset special class this year as Berlin, the 28th seed, 21st seeded Sheehan, 24th seed New Canaan, 18th seed Bunnell, 26th seed Guilford, 23rd seed New London and 27th seed Jonathan Law all upset higher seeds. Darien, the 33rd seed, also upset top seed Cheney Tech.

GIRL'S TENNIS

CLASS M STATE TOURNAMENT

Wilton 7, Berlin 0

There will be no Cinderella run in the state tournment this year for the Berlin girl's tennis team as they were throttled in the first round by Wilton, 7-0. The match took place at Daniel Hand of Madison. The host team beat Wilton in the second round 6-1.

GIRL'S GOLF

Berlin 180, New Britain 231

The Berlin Lady Redcoats Golf Team defeated New Britain at Stanley Golf Course on Tuesday to improve their regular season record to 17-1.  Final score, Berlin 180 and New Britain 231. Julia Kemmling and Ashley D'Attilio were Co-Medalists, both carding 44's on the par 37 white nine. Emily-Anne Deutsch added a 45 while both Emily Stickel and Victoria Fagan came in at 47.

The nine hole match was supplemented by another nine holes to complete the 18 hole Pisk Memorial Tournament. Berlin won the 18 hole tournament defeating New Britain by a score of 360 to 440. Julia Kemmling and Ashley D'Attilio tied for Tournament Medalist honors, both shooting 88. 

Berlin is in action next at Timberlin on Wednesday May 30 against Farmington in a match that will determine the CCC West Conference Champion.

MIDDLE SCHOOL BASEBALL

Berlin 11, East Hampton 0

The McGee baseball team remained unbeaten with a victory over East Hampton on Friday. 

Nick Naples was the star of the game pitching four scoreless innings and ripping two doubles. Jon Beckman pitched the final three innings to preserve the shutout. 

Brendan Funari, Cote Lacasse, and Jake Loiselle hit the ball well. Cote Libby and Vinny Biscoglio were terrific on defense.
