New Faces, Old Legacy Names Included in 2014 Berlin Hall of Fame
The 2014 class was announced Thursday and with a range of athletes and former Berlin High School scholars, the induction ceremony promises to provide a long history of success.
Jack Cooney, a 1945 graduate of Berlin High School, made waves with his talent. In 1996, David Francalangia showed skills that helped make a name for himself and brought the school into the spotlight.
They are separated by more than 50 years, so what do the two have in common? They will soon be the newest members of the Berlin High School Athletic Hall of Fame.
The Hall of Fame Committee announced the 2014 class, consisting of ten athletes, on Thursday afternoon. The newest inductees will be honored with a special ceremony to take place on April 24, 2014, at the Aqua Turf Club in Plantsville.
“I believe we have another outstanding class of inductees going into this years hall of fame,” said Jerry Siegal, chairman of the nominating committee. “This year’s class includes athletes covering six different decades from the 1940's through 1990's. With this being our fifth class it will bring us to a total of 61 inductees.”
“There are still many more deserving individuals and teams that will looked at in the future,” he said. “One thing that has really helped bring some of these deserving athletes to our attention is our website that we introduced this past spring. Since its launch we have had almost 3,000 visits with one of the links being our nomination form which the public has taken advantage of to submit some very deserving athletes for us to take under consideration.”
The web site is available at http://www.bhshalloffame.org/ and shows past inductees, allows for nominations and details the sports hall of fame history. Ticket information for the upcoming ceremony will also be available soon.
The 2014 ceremony will also honor the 1963 football team for their contirbutions. Take a look at all of the 2014 inductees:
