The Berlin High School boy's lacrosse team won its second game of the season in thrilling fashion on Tuesday night with an overtime victory over visiting East Catholic.

The Redcoats offensive star of the game was Greg Buck, who scored three goals (including the game winner in overtime) and dished out one assist. Also scoring for Berlin were Ryan Wearne (2), Nick Mangiafico (1), and Brandon Ralph (1).

"The offense has really been taken to task by the coaches, and, as varsity athletes, we expect them to play at a high level," said head coach, Scott Rossi.  "They really stepped up with a gutsy performance against a well-established East Catholic program."

In the second half, the big story for Berlin was its defense. The Redcoats found themselves in several man-down situations and they rose to the occasion and shut the East Catholic offense down, only allowing one goal in the last two quarters.  Matt Cote had 10 saves on the night, and Tyler Bouchard, Wojtek Zak, Kyle Bolduc, and Jey Soucy were solid.  Without question, the unsung heroes on the night were two of Berlin's short-stick defenders, Ricky Mullins and Luc Bolduc.  "Those two guys came up huge for us tonight," said Rossi, "Without their hustle and ability to transition the ball for us, we are in big trouble."

Berlin is in action again on Thursday night when it hosts Newington at Scalise Field. The junior varsity plays at 5:30 p.m., and the varsity team goes on at 7 p.m. The concession stand will be open, and there will also be a Mother's Day plant sale at the field.

GIRL'S GOLF

Berlin 163, Conard 221

The Berlin Lady Redcoats Golf Team moved it's perfect regular season record to 7-0 by defeating Conard on Wednesday at Timberlin Golf Course. In doing so, Berlin recorded an amazing team score of only 163 to Conard's 221. Julia Kemmling continued her stellar play, taking Medalist honors with a 39. Senior Co-Captains, Victoria Fagan and Emily Stickel were right behind, both carding great rounds of 40. Ashley D'Attilio rounded out the team scoring with a well played 44.

"I've said this since the start of the season, these girls and this team have the potential to be really special, today was special indeed," Berlin coach Jim Barnes said. "Any team that shoots a 163 on the back nine at Timberlin is approaching greatness in girls high school golf. I don't know this for a fact, but I have to believe today's result is one of the the best team scores against par in the history of Connecticut girls high school golf.

"There is so much to be excited about. Julia is simply the real deal and my two senior co-aptains, Victoria and Emily are starting to play really, really well.  Then I've got five players, Ashley D'Attilio, Emily-Anne Deutsch, Caroline D'Attilio, Erika Park and Abbie Underwood who are all so closely matched it's hard to decide who plays. All of these girls could easily start for most any team in the state.

"Where we go from here is the big question. Do we get full of ourselves and become complacent or do we challenge ourselves to get even better?  I'm really hoping we do the latter."

BOY'S GOLF

Berlin 160, Middletown 198

The Redcoats won at Lyman Orchards. Ryan Marquis and Jeremy DeSimone were co-medalists shooting 39. Connor Bowen shot 40, Pat Bostrom shot 42, D.J. Caron shot 43 and Trafford Underwood shot 45.

"Ryan was medalist for the second day in a row," Berlin coach John Line said. "He is competitive and being medalist will only motivate him more. Jeremy has been hitting the ball well. Today he started to put it together and both he and I expect good scores from here on out."

BOY'S TENNIS

Bristol Central 4, Berlin 3

Berlin dropped a hard-fought match to Bristol Central. Dan Rombola continued his superior play at number one singles by dominating yet another senior. Sophomores Mike Gurrieri and Matt Trevethan also won their singles matches but Bristol Central swept all three doubles matches.

Berlin hosts a very good RHAM team on Friday.

BASEBALL

Planville 5, Berlin 4 (11)

Berlin and Plainville have played many memorable games and this one ranks right up there as it featured a Berlin comeback, a power outage and a crazy play at home plate.

With the teams tied 2-2, a Plainville runner stole home and another runner came around to score on the same play when the ball got away from the Berlin catcher.

Bobby Mozzicato and Kyle Naples led the comeback and Connor Bennett delivered the game-tying hit.

Plainville scored in the 11th inning after the lights went off an inning earlier.

GIRL'S TRACK

Berlin 105, Platt 45

The girl's track team beat Platt 105-45 on Tuesday afternoon.

Berlin had a few standout performances. Shannon Mahoney finished first in triple jump and second in long jump with her best jump of the year at 14-7.  Briana Cass finished first in 100 hurdles, second in triple jump and third in high jump. Kristen Madeia finished first in 1,600m at 5:51 and Nicole Sylvain finished first in 3,200m with 12:57.

Other event winners from Tuesday: 4x800m Relay, Catherine Voelpel (200m, 400m), Alex Carbonell (800m), 4x400m Relay, Kate Piotrowicz (Shot, Discus) and Taylor Lupini (High Jump).

The Girls will be competing at the Middletown Invitational this Saturday

BOY'S TRACK

Berlin 89, Platt 61

The Berlin boys track team won 89-61 over Platt on Tuesday.

"It was a big win for us, the boys ran great," Berlin coach Rich Hanbury said. "We won all three relays and there were so many personal bests."

Matt Kall qualified for the state meet in the 200 and Berlin now has three solid hurdlers in Toby Hull, Alex Taddeo and the addition of Vishnu Patel in the 300 hurdles, who is only a second or so from state qualification after only his first race.

Connor Hilbie continues his unbeaten string in the CCC South in the 1,600 and 3,200 and Brendan McLarty continues to be a dominant force in the 800. According to Hanbury, "Carter Scarrozzo is shaping up to be a quality shot putter and triple jumper and we are seeing some significant improvements in the jumps by Karol Nawalaniec and Toby Hull."
