It was a solid, if not surprising start to the season for the Berlin softball team, in a 10-4 win over Tolland.

Berlin thought it would be very solid on defense and have to scrape to find runs but on this day the defense made four errors but hit the ball very well.

"Our defense was very inconsistent with four errors but I think we'll be able to clean that up soon," Berlin coach Jason Pires said. "I was very happy with the offense. Tolland was a quarterfinal team last year and brought back quite a few players. It was good to see my athletes step up to the challenge. We have things to work on but overall it was a great opening day.

Brittany Labbadia led the offense, going 2-for-4 with a three-run home run and two runs scored. Erin McKinnon was 3-for-3 and Kaitlyn Guild was 2-for-2 with two RBI.

Sophomore Makayla Harris pitched the complete game win in the circle, giving up three earned runs and striking out seven.

"It was not her best performance but for the first game as a varsity pitcher it was a good effort," Pires added.

BASEBALL

RHAM 7, Berlin 3

Berlin was tied 3-3 with host RHAM with two outs in the sixth inning but then gave up four earned runs and fell in its season opener.

Tim Norton was the starting pitcher and pitched well, only allowing two earned runs, but took the loss.

Darren Grabowski had two of the four Berlin hits and added an assist from centerfield to home, throwing out a would-be runner.

BOYS TENNIS

Conard 7, Berlin 0

The Berlin Redcoats opened the season at Conard and had a tough start.

The team competed well though especially at #1 singles and doubles. Sophomore Dan Rombola playing his first match as #1 was leading an experienced senior player in the third set (4-2) when he had to default with a hand injury.

"It was a disappointing end to the day for Dan that saw him play very well," said Berlin coach Rex Smith.

The #1 Doubles team of Jaydip Patel and Jack Stafstrom  playing for the first time together played very well, losing in two tie-breakers, in a match that could have gone either way.

Berlin next plays tomorrow Thursday, April 5 at Hall in West Hartford.

GIRLS TRACK AND FIELD

Berlin 90, Maloney 56

The girls team won its first meet of the season, 90-56 against Maloney in Meriden.

Senior Kate Piotrowicz won the Shot and Discus events. Her discus throw of 103'7.5" set a new school record surpassing the old record by more than a foot.

"I couldn't be happier for Kate," Berlin coach Steve Soucy said. "At the end of last year she missed the record by 2" at the CCC South Championships. To then have to wait nearly a year to get another shot at it was tough. But, she got it out of the way early this year."

Senior Madison Tavarozzi set personal bests in the 100 meter (12.9) and the 200m (28.3) qualifying for the State MM meet in both events. Senior Briana Cass placed in three events. She placed second in the Triple Jump, third in High Jump and second in the 100 meter Hurdles.

"Briana worked really hard at the hurdles over the winter and is really coming along," Soucy said.

The middle distance team put in a dominant performance. Catherine Voelpel, Kristen Madeia and Alex Carbonell went 1-2-3 in the 400 meters and Carbonell and Medeia followed up with a 1-2 finish in the 800 meters while Voelpel won the 200 meters.

"It has been really nice having Alex and Catherine to help bring Kristen along," Soucy said. "As a freshman, Kristen is running four tough events and training alongside them everyday.  I don't think there is any doubt that in a few years it will pay off for her."

Other event winners were: the 4x800 meters Relay (Alex Carbonell, Kristen Madeia, Catherine Voelpel, Nicole Grieco), Nicole Grieco 1,600 meters, Nicole Sylvain 3,200 meters, 4x400 meters Relay (Carbonell, Voelpel, Madeia, Emily Ditmar), Meaghan Trzasko in the Javelin and Lix Orsini in the Pole Vault.
