Girl's tennis grabs a big win, boys still winless

Berlin 4, Simsbury 3

In a matchup of two of last year's CCC division champions, the Berlin Redcoats girl's tennis team won an exciting 4-3 decision over Simsbury.

The Redcoats Eva Rybka led the way in singles matches by defeating Monika Dragulski 6-3, 6-2 at number one.  Simsbury then won the remaining 3 singles matches as Melissa Gino defeated Shawna Rosol 6-0, 6-0; Danielle Weingartner defeated Kelly Byrnes 6-2, 6-3; and Julia Keppel defeated Jaclyn Hoffman 6-0, 6-1.

Berlin swept all three doubles matches, two of which were in dramatic fashion.  Meg Pitkin and Kelly Josephson won a tough three-set match over Sarah Mattison and Nicole Baker 7-6, 5-7, 6-2. The Zembko sisters, Stephanie and Caroline, then defeated Laina Jones and Katie Thorne 7-5, 6-3. And in the deciding match, Emma Johnson and Autumn Edelson remained unbeaten this season by winning a close 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 decision.

The Redcoats return back to the courts tomorrow (Friday, April 27th) when they face undefeated Glastonbury at home.

BOY'S TENNIS

East Catholic 7, Berlin 1

Freshman Jack Stafstrom was the lone winner at number five singles as East Catholic stayed unbeaten and Berlin remained winless at 0-8 on the season.
