Girl's tennis rolls past Rocky Hill.

 

GIRL'S TENNIS

Berlin 6, Rocky Hill 1

The Berlin Redcoats girl's tennis team opened its season and defense of its 2011 CCC South Division championship with a 6-1 victory over Rocky Hill.

In singles matches, Eva Rybka led the way with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Sydney Greenspan.  Other Berlin singles wins were Kelly Byrnes 6-3, 6-4 over Claire Laing, and Charlotte Cichowski 6-2, 6-4 over Mary O'Sullivan.  Rocky Hill's Ana Engelhardt was victorious over Shawna Rosol 6-1, 6-1.

Berlin swept all three doubles matches, led by Meg Pitkin and Kelly Josephson's 6-0, 6-2 win over Aastha Rava and Saloni Shah. The team of Caroline and Stephanie Zembko defeated Corette O'Connor and Kelly Murphy 6-0, 6-0, and Emma Johnson and Autumn Edelson defeated Heather Lawlor and Thaia Tzickas 6-3, 6-1.

Coach Diane Cleary's Redcoats return to action against Hall on Wednesday, April 11 at the Berlin High School courts.

Berlin 19, Suffield 10

Cassidy Goodwin had five goals and Olivia Martino and Bridget White four each to lead Berlin past visiting Suffield.

Shannon Murphy had three goals, Jenn Straub two goals and Robyn Riggott one for the winners.

Berlin goalie Nicole Damboise had 13 saves.

Berlin improved to 2-1 with the win while Suffield fell to 0-2.

"We got outstanding play from Erin Goodwin on defense and Shannon Murphy and Bridget White had fantastic performances all over the field," said Berlin coach Laura Abbatemarco. "Coach Cyr and I are impressed with the team's ability to move the ball and finish on net, while showing a good, strong defense in front of the goal."

The Berlin junior varisty had an impressive win 11-7 as well.

SOFTBALL

Berlin 9, Simsbury 0

Sophomore pitcher Makayla Harris threw her first varsity shutout, allowing six hits, striking out three and walking just one as Berlin rolled.

Brittany Labbadia went 3-for-4 with a triple and three runs scored. Paige Owens was 2-for-4 with a double, triple and two RBIs.

Berlin improves to 2-0 on the season.

BASEBALL

Southington 10, Berlin 0

The Redcoats never got untracked in falling to Southington at Zipadelli Field at Sage Park.

Berlin could only muster four hits. Darren Grabowski had two of the four hits for Berlin, now 0-3 on the season.

Conner Bennet started on the mound for the Redcoats and was relieved by Shane Garfi in the fifth inning.
