Girls Tennis Team Makes BHS History

Redcoats become first Berlin team to ever win two matches in state tournament play.

The day was very long and hot for the Berlin Redcoats girls tennis team Tuesday.

But ask any of the players and they will tell you it was well worth it to be on the court from 1 p.m. until almost 7:30 p.m.

Berlin beat Bacon Academy in the first team match of the day 6-1 and then followed that up with a 7-0 whitewashing of Ellington in the second match.

The two wins puts Berlin in the quarterfinals for the first time in school history.

The Redcoats also earned another perk with the two wins. An upset on the other side of the draw will give Berlin another home match. The Redcoats will play host to Tolland Wednesday as Tolland upset fourth-seeded Woodstock Academy.

Number one singles player Eva Rybka struggled mightily in her first match with numerous unforced errors. Despite her inconsistent play, she won her first match 7-6, 6-3. The other three singles, Jenn Flannery, April Regan and Shawna Rosol all coasted to wins in the first match.

The lone loss for Berlin against Bacon was at number one doubles. The pairing of Kristen Cavaliere and Kelly Josephson lost to Bacon.

Number two doubles team Kelly Byrnes and Sam Cooper and third doubles Megan Pitkin and Emma Johnson won versus Bacon for the 6-1 final score.

The Redcoats dominated the second match.

Berlin will now play CCC foe Tolland Wednesday at 3 p.m.

The two teams were scheduled to play this season but with the rainy weather the coaches could not come up with a make-up date. The two teams will get a shot at each other now, with a berth in the Class M semifinals on the line.

Spectators are welcome.
