Girl's Golf Bounces Back From High Score: Boy's Tennis Still Looking For First Win

Berlin High School Sports Roundup

The Berlin Girl's Golf Team extended its record to three wins against no defeats by defeating Newington 195 to 209 at Indian Hill Country Club on Wednesday. While the Redcoats won, the score was high for them and they didn't take long to bounce back.

Julia Kemmling captured medalist honors with a 44. Other Berlin scores included Ashley D'Attilio, 46, Caroline D'Attilio, 51, Emily Deutsch and Emma Atkinson both with 54.

"This was not our finest hour on the golf course but conditions were very difficult," Berlin coach Jim Barnes said. "The wind was gusting all afternoon and the greens had just been punched and top-dressed. Effective lag putting was impossible and even the shortest of putts proved to be an adventure. The poor green conditions easily added five to six shots to each girl's score."

On Thursday, The Lady Redcoats Girl's Golf Team defeated Avon and East Catholic in a tri-match Thursday at Timberlin golf Course. Berlin posted it's lowest team total of the year, 171, to Avon's 198 and East Catholic's 226.

Berlin's undefeated record improved to 5 and 0.  Avon suffered its first loss of the season and moved to 7-1. East Catholic is now 0-5.

Berlin was once again led by Julia Kemmling who continued to amaze by posting an even par 36 on Timberlin's tough front 9.  Her round included two birdies, two bogies and five pars.

Kemmling's 36 was good for medalist honors edging out Avon's Marissa Grillo who carded an impressive 38. Kemmling has now won medalist honors in every match this season.

Berlin's team scoring was rounded out by Senior Co-Captain Emily Deutsch, who carded a very solid 44, Ashley D'Attilio 45 and Senior Co-Captain Caroline D'Attilio with a 46.

"What a difference a day makes," Barnes said. "Yesterday we struggled at Indian Hill where the course conditions were terrible. Today, Timberlin was in great shape, as always, and the girls played well. I'm really proud of how the team bounced back today. Emily Deutsch's game is starting to come around and both Ashley and Caroline were just a few short game corrections away from the low 40's".

"And then there is Julia Kemmling. I hope everyone is paying attention to what this young lady is doing on the golf course. She is just a sophomore and going back to last year has earned medalist honors in an unbelievable 17 of the 20 matches in which she has played.

"Let's face it, girls golf doesn't get as much attention as sports like football, basketball, baseball etc. Having said that, I challenge anyone who follows high school athletics to pick any player from any sport that has performed better than Julia. She is that good and by the time she graduates two years from now she may very well prove to be the best single sport athlete ever to attend Berlin High School. The record speaks for itself."

The Lady Redcoats are in action next at Wethersfield on Monday.
