Girls, Boys Basketball Teams Split With Bristol Eastern

Host Redcoat girls beat Lancers 53-44 while boys fall in overtime on the road.

The Berlin girls basketball team got 21 points from Ashley Malloy and 13 from Courtney Trzasko to beat visiting Bristol Eastern 53-44 at Gibney Gymnasium Thursday night.

"We wanted to win every quarter and we almost did that," Berlin coach Sheila King said. "We won the first two quarters and had a nice lead and won the third quarter but we lost the last quarter and they made it closer. We almost won them all so that was a positive sign."

Berlin led 33-22 at halftime and increased the lead to 49-33 on a Malloy lay-up with 5:10 left in the game.

From that point, however, Bristol Eastern went on a 10-1 run to close to within 50-43 with 34 seconds left. All but two points came from the free throw line and six of them were from inside threat Marisa Smith.

Malloy made three of four free throws for the final margin.

While Malloy and Trzasko led the scoring, Chelsea Vujs led the defense and rebounding with six steals, six deflections and eight rebounds.

"We had trouble in the fourth quarter because we have to learn how to close out a game," King said. "We couldn't match up with them on the inside but we didn't think they could match up with us outside. We basically have four guards out there at a time so it's tough for other teams.

"Chelsea Vujs has turned into a great leader for us. She is a playmaker. Everything seems to go through her. She does a great job on defense and has great anticipation."

The Girls improved to 7-2 with the losses to two of the top teams in the state.

"I just told the girls I'm pleased with where we are right now," King said. "They are starting to figure out what is expected of them and they are working really hard in practice. As a result, we are the only unbeaten team in the conference. Middletown is next with one loss."

Boys Basketball

Berlin drops to 4-3 with the loss.
