Girl's Basketball Continues Surprising Year

With one game to go, Redcoats are 16-3 and unbeaten 13-0 in conference play.

The 19th game of the season was over almost before it started as Berlin thumped a helpless Bulkeley team 56-8 to improve to 16-3 on the season and 13-0 in the CCC South.

The score could have been worse as Berlin used hockey shifts, five at a time to enter and exit the game. In the second half, it looked like Coach Sheila King told her team no shots unless they were wide-open lay-ups and the Redcoats carried out her orders.

Sophomore Hallie Nygren led Berlin with eight points followed by Paige Young, Chelsea Vujs and Courtney Brennan with six points each. DD Barrett added five points and four girls scored four points.

The only thing left in the regular season for Berlin is Senior Night Monday against rival Plainville. The girls, led by the junior class, will wear yellow t-shirts and raise money to aid in the medical costs of Skylar Caswell, who has spina bifida. Caswell, who is 8-years old, comes to most of the Berlin games and has for the past four years in her wheelchair.

King said her team has proven those outside the Berlin community wrong.

"I think this team was underestimated and underappreciated outside of town," King said. "People would say we were small in size and undisciplined in our style of play but we've progressed as the season has gone on.

"But it's all about peaking at the right time and we're pretty good. The leadership has developed throughout the season. Chelsea Vujs and DD Barrett were named captains after the 10th game and they have led us very well and we've also gotten good leadership from Paige Young and Paige Owens. Olivia Sherman has been injured but she has stuck by us and been a great role model for the younger girls."

After Senior Night, Berlin will likely be the number five seed in the CCC Tournament. The seedings are done by overall record and 16 teams qualify. As the fifth seed, Berlin would play the number 12 seed. A win would allow Berlin another shot at one of their losses, either Tolland or Manchester.
