Newington's Kate McNally took the overall race win but Berlin took the next 12 places.

"Our first race last year at sage we posted a team time of 2:03:29.  This year we came in at 1:59:33," Soucy said. "Any time a team can post under 2:00:00 at Sage Park it is a good day and for us to do it on the first race of the year with the weather conditions as they were was exactly what we were looking for."

Nicole Grieco led the way for Berlin followed by Kaylene Sylvain, Brittany Sullivan, Nicole Sylvain and Paige Young as our scoring five.

Newington 22, Berlin 32

Boys held at Sage Park 3.1 miles.

The boys team dropped a tough one to Newington in its opening meet.

"The most encouraging thing to come out of the race is that the boys team time, like the girls, is lower than last year at the same point," Soucy said. "Last year we opened up at 1:43:23 at Sage and this year we posted 1:41:59.  That is fantastic considering we also graduated our number one runner Shaun Sullivan."

Junior Brendan McLarty led the way Berlin placing second, sophomore James Dwyer placed fifth overall, Matt Kall seventh, Will Cavedon eighth and Ryan Kliszewski 10th overall.

"Our times were good but when the other team places 1, 3 and 4 it is very difficult to beat," Soucy added.

The boys and girls team will both be running this weekend at the Windham Invitational.
