Boys' Golf Has Talent

How far can four-year starter Kevin Jud lead the Redcoats?

John Line took over the boys' golf coaching job three years ago and his teams have amassed an 87-11-2 record since then.

Though the Redcoats lost Joe Cooper and Ryan Campbell to graduation and both are playing at Westfield State, Berlin should not only be a title contender for the CCC South but the state championship as well.

Senior Kevin Jud has seemingly been playing golf at Berlin High School for 10 years but he is finally a senior. The reason he has been on the scene so long is that he made All-State as a freshman and then repeated as a sophomore and junior as well. He was also the silver medalist at the Connecticut Junior Amateur.

He will go on to play at Central Connecticut next year, where he will join former teammate Kevin Josephson as a Blue Devil.

Brendon Hull is a senior captain.

"He quietly goes about his business, has a real passion for the game, but keeps things in perspective," said Coach Line.

Chris Martino has been playing well this spring according to Line and will be an important contributor this year.

Connor Bowen is a junior who played in the second spot for most of the season last year. He has shown progress each year and that will continue.

Pat Bostrom is called "Mr. Flatliner" by Line. "He really loves playing the game the correct way and it rubs off on others," Line said of Bostrom.

Jeremy Desimone "has the tools and now he is starting to trust his swing and is playing well," said Line.

Jud and Hull are the captains but Martino is emerging as a leader as well.

"We have several goals," Line said. "Win the CCC South, play well in the conference and be in the final foursome at the state tournament."

Line said the teams to beat in the conference are Maloney,  Bristol Central and Eastern and Plainville.

"We have several strong non-conference opponents," Line said. "Xavier, Northwest at Wampanoag, Glastonbury twice, once at Wethersfield, Conard and Hall, Portland and scrimmages with Cheshire, Amity.

"We are playing at mid-season form currently. If we progress like we did last year it will be a good year. Of course that means practice and not just playing."
