Girls track performs well at CCC South meet.

GIRLS TRACK

Berlin third at division meet: The Berlin girls track team had a solid third place finish with 107 points.

Making the All-Conference team were: Alex Carbonell in the 800 meters, Catherine Voelpel in the 200 meters and 400 meters, Kate Piotrowicz in the discus, Dawn Grabowski in the pole vault and Chelsea Vujs in 300 meter hurdles.

Conference champion Catherine Voelpel in the 400 meters in 58.14 (o.o4 of a second from school record time as a sophomore.) She was also only a few hundredths off the school record in the 200 meters where she took second. "Unfortunately, the timing people had a glitch during the 200m race and we were left only with a handheld time," Berlin coach Steve Soucy said.

Berlin took two second place finishes in the relays (4x400, 4x800 Carbonell, K. Sylvain, Voelpel and Stef Parillo in both races.) Kate Piotrowicz threw a career best 102'3" (two inches from school record) in the discus to take second place.  Jacqueline Carlson finished third in javelin and Carla Mangiafico finished third in High Jump.

Nicole Johnson qualified for Class MM in discus with her best throw of 86'7" and Dawn Grabowski finished her career at BHS on a high note finishing sixth in javelin and taking second place in the pole vault giving her All-Conference honors.

"Overall a great day, we didn't really go after team points and chose to only run the kids in their main events as if we were at the state meet," Soucy said. "A few weeks ago we said that once we lowered the kids workload during training their times would significantly come down. That certainly did prove to be the case with a few kids coming really close to setting school records.  Catherine Voelpel dropped nearly a full second in the 400 meters and will most likely be the top seed in Class MM in the 400 meters and possibly the 200 meters as well.  The seeds will be posted Friday at 3:30 on CIAC."

Berlin 176, NW Catholic 201: The Berlin girls golf team defeated Northwest Catholic 176-201 at Timberlin Golf Course. Berlin's perfect record improves to 13-0 while NW Catholic falls to 14-6.

Berlin co-captain Alyssa Scheyd was match medalist with a well-played 41 in windy conditions.  She received excellent support from Victoria Fagan and Emily Stickel who both posted a 43 and Emily Deutsch who carded a 49.

"This was a very important conference match for us to win," Berlin coach Jim Barnes said. "Northwest Catholic is a very fine team. We now face Hall on Friday and New Britain next Tuesday. Victories in these matches will earn us the CCC regular season Conference Championship.

"This marks the seventh time this season that our team has scored in the 170's, truely a remarkable accomplishment by these girls.  These scores really speak to the balance we have on our team.  It's not just one or two girls.  Everyone is contributing."

SOFTBALL

Bristol Central 8, Berlin 2: Bristol Central topped Berlin for the second time this season to grab the CCC South championship in Bristol.

Monique St. Jarre went the distance on the mound for the Redcoats.

Berlin fell to 15-5 with the loss and will find its seed for the Class L state tournament Friday on the CIAC website, www.casciac.org.
