Berlin 12, Haddam-Killingworth 1: The Redcoats boys lacrosse team rolled to another victory on Monday night with a commanding performance against Haddam-Killingworth.  The Redcoats built up a 10-0 lead by the half and, after pulling back the reins, finished with a 12-1 win.

"Games like this are a great opportunity for our younger players to see significant time on the field," said Coach Scott Rossi. "And they need to take advantage of the situation when it does occur."

On offense, senior co-captain, Michael Markliewicz led the way with three goals.  Brandon Ralph and Ryan Wearne each had two goals. Jordan Kinney, Dan DiCioccio, Jordan Kradas, Greg Buck, and Kevin Shea added a goal apiece.

Once again, the defense was solid in front of their goalies, senior co-captain, Jeff Gotta, and Matt Cote.

GIRLS TRACK AND FIELD

Bristol Central 95, Berlin 55: The girls team dropped to Bristol Central 95-55 yesterday in a meet held at BCHS.

"Even though we lost we still had some very impressive numbers," Coach Steve Soucy said.

Nicole Johnson had a personal best in shot winning the event with a 31'9." Catherine Voelpel continued to improve in each of her events. She won three individual events 100 meters, 200 meters, 400 meters, each in season best times 13.0, 26.7, 59.2.

Alex Carbonell continued to lower her times as well. She put up a season best in the 400 meters with a 63.

"Alex focuses on the 800 meters so we put her in a ton of events for the first half of the season to build her running strength," Soucy said. Her 800 meters time is frustrating her right now but as we decrease the event load, her time will drastically come down in the 800. Yesterday she ran 2x800 each in 2:33 and 2x400 each in 63.

"Junior Chelsea Vujs has done a great job in the hurdles for us this year.  She ran cross country for me in the fall and we kept after her in the winter to do track and when she decided to do the hurdles coach Rosek and I didn't really know what to expect. But, Coach Rosek has spent a lot of time with her and she is working really hard and the work is paying off. She has qualified for the Class MM meet and her times continue to improve and she continues to win races for us."

Berlin is next at the Lindy Remigino and Middletown Invitationals on Saturday.

"Our 4x800 relay team, Alex, Catherine and Kate Piotrowicz all qualified for the very difficult to get into Remigino meet and the rest of our varsity team will be in Middletown," Soucy added.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Conard 13, Berlin 6

Berlin 8, Newington 7: Bianca Jacques scored three goals, Shannon Murphy two and Cassidy Goodwin one goal in the Redcoats loss to Conard.

In the win over Newington, Jacques added three more goals, Murphy also had three and Goodwin two. Goalie Nicole Damboise had 18 saves in the win for Berlin.

GIRLS GOLF

Berlin 177, Glastonbury 235, Bacon Academy 263: The Berlin Redcoats golf team used balanced scoring to defeat Glastonbury and Bacon Academy at Glastonbury Hills Country Club on Tuesday.  Berlin is now 6-0 on the season.

Leading the Lady Redcoats was Alyssa Scheyd who tied for medalist honors with Glastonbury's Morgan Powers. Both girls shot 42. Rounding out the Berlin scoring were Emily Deutsch 44, Caroline D'Attilio 45 and Victoria Fagan with a 46.  Both Deutsch and D'Attilio carded their best rounds of the year.

"This is our third straight match where we have scored in the 170's," Berlin coach Jim Barnes said. "Alyssa had a great round today on a very tough golf course. That's nothing new for Alyssa. What I'm really excited about is the play of Emily Deutsch and Caroline D'Attilio. These girls are both just sophomores and to post scores like they did today on a course they had never seen before is really special. I'm also very proud of Victoria Fagan and her effort. Coming off of two consecutive 39's I know she was disappointed with a 46 but she was battling a sore shoulder all day. This clearly impacted her game. She's a tough kid but we may need to give that shoulder some rest before she's plays again.

BOYS TENNIS

Southington 4, Berlin 3: The Redcoats dropped back to 3-3 losing to “LL” Southington 4-3.

Berlin fought hard winning all three doubles…both David Balfore and Kevin Stritch and Ethan Cope and Jaydip Patel won hard-fought matches lasting over two hours. The number one doubles team of seniors Adam Salwocki and Mike Voelpel also won.

Southington swept the singles in straight sets.

The boys travel to RHAM on Friday to play another very competitive team
