Berlin Girls to Participate in Memorial Tournament

Erica Garrett Holiday Basketball Tournament in Rocky Hill

The 10th annual Erica Garrett Holiday Basketball Tournament, featuring girls' teams from Berlin, Farmington, Portland and Rocky Hill, is set to tip off Monday evening at Rocky Hill High School.

A 1995 graduate of Rocky Hill, where she played on the girls' basketball team, Garrett lost her battle with cancer in 2000. All proceeds from the tournament will go to the scholarship fund created in her name.

An all-tournament team will be chosen, and trophies will be awarded to the winners and runners-up.

Portland (4-1), led by Kelley Coleman, comes into the tournament with the best record, while Farmington (3-1), Berlin (3-2) and Rocky Hill (1-3) will look to add to their win totals.

The tournament has always been exclusive to girls' basketball teams, but according to Rocky Hill Athletic Director Thomas McCabe, the boys' programs will likely participate in the coming year.

"Next year, I'm hoping to combine both to make it a little bigger," McCabe said.
