Berlin Girl's Golf Team Wins Third Straight State Championship

Sophomore Julia Kemmling shoots lowest score in tournament with +6, 80.

The Berlin Lady Redcoat's Golf Team captured a piece of history Tuesday at Orange Hills Country Club when they won their third consecutive State Championship.  No CIAC girls golf team has every won more than two state titlles and no team has ever won three in a row.

On a day when the winds howled, Berlin posted a team score of 358, good enough to beat second place Greenwich and Staples, who tied with 370, by 12 strokes. Farmington finished fourth at 390.

Julia Kemmling led Berlin, and the field, with the low score of the day, an excellent round of 80 on the par 74 track. Kemmling's tournament medalist effort was followed by Ashley D'Attilio at 86, Abbie Underwood at 93, Emily Deutsch at 99 and Caroline D'Attilio at 100.

"This was a great day for our girls and a great day for the Berlin Girl's Golf program," said Berlin coach Jim Barnes. "Three state titles in a row is just unbelievable. The girls peaked at the right time.

"I knew Greenwich, Staples and Farmington would be tough but after the girls won the CCC tournament by 26 strokes last week I was cautiously optimistic this would happen.  We have a wonderfully balanced team with some very solid golfers..... and then there is Julia Kemmling.

"Simply put, she is the best player in the state. If she doesn't win Player of the Year honors, somebody should be arrested. A few years ago when Diana Taurasi played for UConn, Geno Auriemma was quoted as saying 'I believe we can beat anyone because I've got Diana and they don't.' Well, I've got Julia and they don't, plus I've also got Ashley, Emily, Caroline and Abbie.  I'll take my chances  with this group on any course, against any team, anytime."
