Athlete Of The Week: Robyn Riggott

Berlin goalie is off to tremendous start.

Robyn Riggott started playing soccer in the second grade and immediately she was put in goal.

"I was always the girl who wanted to play goal and none of the other girls did," Riggott said. "I always felt good to be part of the team and it seemed like teams always needed a goalie."

Riggott was thrown into the fire her freshman year. Starting goalie Amy Ouellette got mono before the state tournament and Riggott was inserted in goal. She has started in goal ever since.

The daughter of Wayne and Amy Riggott, Robyn Riggott is the first Berlin Subway-Berlin Patch Athlete of the Week for the fall athletic season.

Riggott shut out highly-regarded Glastonbury until they scored with 1:14 left in the second overtime in Berlin's 1-0 season-opening loss. She made several spectacular saves to keep Berlin in the game. She then came back and shut out Middletown Saturday night in the Redcoats' 1-0 win.

"There are 15 seniors on this team and we have been playing together, some of us, since we were in second grade," said Riggott, who has a 96.5 average in school, is a member of the National Honor Society, UpBeat, the Berlin High School band and also plays lacrosse for BHS. "We are a very close team. It's never just one of us taking charge, it's all of us together."

So how good has Riggott been?

"It was pretty cool the other night when the parents of the Glastonbury girls were coming up to me and saying I played a really good game," she said. "You don't expect that but it's a big compliment. When the other team knows you are tough and when you make that spectacular save and the crowd is going crazy, that's why it is so fun to play goalie."

Riggott has played for Leszek Wrona Ajax Premier but will likely not play soccer in college.

"I'm looking at high academic schools," she said. "I'm also looking at playing lacrosse in college possibly."
