Town Will Expect Bids For High School Renovation Project in Mid-May

There is still a large gap between budget approved at referendum and January cost estimate.

In its latest update on the Berlin High School renovation project, Gilbane and the Town of Berlin detailed several significant milestones as the project moves along.

Some of the major milestones were:

  • The foundations and underground utilities for the Phase I building are complete and the slab on the grade was placed on April 19.
  • Phase 2 was approved by the state to go out to bid on Aug. 4.
  • Phase 2 was advertised to bid on Monday April 8 with bids due May 15 and May 16.
  • Phase 2 pre-bid meetings were held at the school by FIP on April 16 and April 18.
  • The state conditionally approved the "Renovate As New" status for the project.

Looking ahead people should see additional work on Phase I including:
  • Setting of the steel
  • Erection of the pre-engineered building
  • Start of the exterior masonry and interior work at the phase I building and connector
  • Receipts of bids for Phase 2 work and development of a final cost estimate
According to the report the biggest and most critical issues coming up are:
  • Receipt of bids and development of final total cost estimate for the project and
  • Preparation of the GMP and award of the work.
At this time the budget for the project approved at referendum is $69,950,000 but the estimated total project cost based on Jan. 8 PCT documents is $84,184,987.
