Swimmers Off To Solid Start

Redcoats beat rival Blue Devils in opening meet.

The Berlin Redcoats swimming and diving team got off to a solid start with a season-opening win over rival Plainville. The team earned many first place finishes and some made states in the first meet of the season.

The 200 IM relay team of Taylor Recck, Katherine Burek, Kelsey Kozikowski, Briana Cass took home a first place.

Kate Piotrowicz won the 200 free with a state qualifying time of 2:11.55. Piotrowicz also came in first in the 100 free and made a state cut.

In the 200 IM Kozikowski came is first and Joanna Wojtun came in 2nd and both made states.

Cass and Recck came in first and second in the 50 free and both were close to making the state time. "I have no doubt they will make the state cut by the end of the season," Berlin coach Amanda McCarthy said.

Leah Pawelczyk came in first in diving and qualified for states.  Sophomore Jenna Paradis came in second and was only a few points away from making states.

Kozikowski came in first in the 100 fly and made states with a time of 1:04. 54. Another freshman, Arian Silas came in 2nd and just missed the state cut.

In the 100 back freshman Kayla Cervoni just missed a state time but came in first.

Burek also made a state time in the 100 breast.

"It was a great start to the season and I am very pleased with our times," McCarthy said. "The girls have been working hard at practice and it shows."
