Swimmers Crush E.O. Smith

Redcoats face Newington in important meet tonight.

On Friday, the Berlin girls swimming and divining team crushed E.O. Smith, 105-76.

The Berlin medley relay broke the school record with a time of 1:59.03. The girls on the relay were Amanda Martino, Katherine Burek, Kelsey Kozikowski and Briana Cass. "They have been trying to break this record since the season started and they final did it," coach Amanda McCarthy said.

Briana Cass also won the 50 free and contributed in the 200 free relay which also came in first. The rest of that team was Kate Piotrowicz, Taylor Recck, and Kozikowski.

Kozikowski also won the 200 IM and the 100 fly. She had a best time in the 100 fly with a time of 1:02.61. "I couldn't be happier with how this freshman has done thus far this season," McCarthy said.

Piotrowicz won the 100 free with a season best time of 58.11.

Martino won the 500 free and the 100 back. She had a best time of 1:05.64.

Leah Pawelczyk won diving.

"It was a great meet with lots of best times," McCarthy said. "We won this meet because of our depth. Megan Pitkin came in second in the 50 free and third in the 100 free, I was very proud of her. Holly Chirico had a fantastic meet with all best times.  She came in fifth in the 200 free and fourth in the 100 back. Taylor Recck also had a great meet. She came in second in the 100 free and third in the 200 free. Joanna Wojtun came in second in the 200 IM with a best time of 2:30.79.  We did win the meet but more importantly we had tons of best times and that is what matters more than the win."

Berlin has its senior night meet today, Tuesday, at 6:30 p.m. at Platt High School in Meriden. The Redcoats take on Newington High School, a team it lost to last season.

"It should be a good meet," McCarthy added. "We are very excited."
