Spell it B-E-E

Students compete in town-wide spelling bee.

McGee Middle School student Zachary Spencer is the winner of the 2011 Town Wide Spelling Bee sponsored by the Junior Woman’s Club of Berlin. Nicholas Giove of Hubbard School won second place. The 20th annual spelling bee for fifth and sixth grade students was held at the Berlin-Peck Memorial Library on Saturday, March 26.

This year eight students took part in the competition, two from each of the town schools; Griswold, Hubbard, Willard and McGee. (Local private schools, St. Paul’s and Mooreland Hill, did not participate this year, although they have done so in the past.) Each individual school holds its own spelling bee at some point during the school year, and then in the spring, the top two students from each school are invited to compete at the town-wide spelling bee.

All of the competitors received gift certificates to Borders book store, and the two winners also received U.S. savings bonds. Top spellers Zachary Spencer and Nicholas Giove will be invited to compete at the state wide bee which will be held on May 15 at Mark T. Sheehan High School in Wallingford.
