Phase I of Berlin High School Project Should Be Done By The End Of August

The majority of the project and cost, however, is contained in Phase II.

With all the sped bumps and hurdles the Berlin High School renovation project has gone through, it may surprise some that the project is actually on schedule according to Public Works Director Art Simonian.

"Phase I is 80 percent complete and should be done by the end of August," Simonian said. "FIP is overseeing Phase II, which accounts for about $62 million of the project. We seem to be in good condition there and we're looking at 36 months once we start that phase."

Work has actually started on that phase though as town staff was able to clear out a majority of the seating in the auditorium and the stage area. Simonian said there are nine trailers set up as temporary storage and there has been some work done on the western side of the building. Those storage trailers will be there for the duration of the project.

Simonian also said neighbors and people using the Berlin High School parking lot or tennis or basketball courts should not worry about the remediation process.

"It is all enclosed within the building," Simonian said. "Part of the job is that they have to keep it all within the building in a confined space. The majority of the windows don't need abatement but there are a small percentage that do. Residents will not even see any of the work going on, as it will be self-contained. The only thing they will see is some site work in 2014-2015 when there are improvements done to the parking lot and some landscaping improvement."
