BHS' Society very selective in members.

Berlin High School held its fall induction ceremony last week to make sure all of its members got the same induction experience.

There was a smaller ceremony in the spring but this one gave everyone involved.

NHS President Michael Rocco led the ceremony.

BHS Principal Francis Kennedy said the NHS wasn’t just the brightest students but the leaders.

“You enhance the fabric of our institution,” Kennedy said. “You help make BHS great. Remember you have not gotten here by yourself but thank your parents and teachers who have helped you. We count on you to continue to make your great contributions to this school.”

Assistant Superintendent of Schools Brian Benigni spoke about leadership.

“You will all look back and remember that one teacher who gave you a boost or had a kind word for you that made you love learning,” he said. “A famous quote says ‘I can’t create leaders. I can only teach you the skills and you can make yourself leaders.’”

The NHS officers each spoke about the four pillars of the NHS: Scholarship, leadership, service and character.

“I am proud to say that National Honor Society wants members to have an 85 average but here at Berlin High we expect an average of 91,” Rocco said of the scholarship pillar. “One day grades will be a thing of the past but the hard work you put in to get those grades will be rewarded.”

“You have a positive influence on your school community and you encourage others to do so,” Vice President Chelsea Farrington said of leadership. “You inspire your peers to step up and you lead yourself.”

Treasurer Megan Pitkin said of service, “You have shown great commitment to serve your community but at the same time appreciate what we have. We have certain requirements we have to fulfill for NHS but as a Berlin chapter we are way beyond what is asked of us.”

“Character is subjective but well defined as what you do when no one watching you,” Secretary Amanda Calderone said of character. “It is bigger than the other pillars because without character you would not lead, you would not volunteer and your would not have good grades.”

Rocco, who is also the senior class president, said NHS is definitely not just about grades.

“I like the fact that students have to be nominated by their peers and get recognized not just for their good grades but all the hard work they have done over the years,” said Rocco, who is hoping to attend Boston college or Southern California next year and major in Computer Science. “It’s very exclusive and I like the fact you can’t apply but have to be nominated. It’s not a club you can just join so it is a privilege to just be in.”
