McGee Sixth Graders Remember 9/11

Students take 'Peace Walk' From school to Berlin High School.

The sixth grade students at McGee Middle School honored  "Everyday Heroes" as a means of commemorating 9/11 Friday morning.

The students have been building toward Friday as a culmination by studying and discussing about the events surrounding that day.  Within these discussions and classroom activities they worked to examine the historical context of 9/11.

As an important culmination of this unit, the students planned an assembly and Peace Walk for the entire grade, which will be held in honor of those lost and who stood up and acted heroically on that fateful day.

The title of the assembly is "Everyday Heroes," focusing on a message of hope and the positive impact an individual can make in the world.

In the assembly, the students heard musical selections from Mrs. Terlecky’s Sound Express, heard brief speeches about 9/11, and watched a video with images from the Twin Towers and the response of some of the heroic individuals in and out of uniform as the day unfolded.  Local service workers joined in to participate and to be honored by McGee.

"We believe that September 11th is an important day for our young people to understand and appreciate," said a McGee press release. "We also sincerely feel that each child should know about these sad events in our nation’s history while also coming to appreciate the incredible acts of heroism and good that have followed. The focus of our morning will be on acts, both small and large, that provide us with the knowledge that all of our lives include important lessons to be learned about ourselves, our world, and the good that each of us can do."
