Cross Country Teams Have Solid Day

Girls sweep to two wins, boys split.

Girls:
Berlin 15, Platt 50
Berlin 15, Plainville 50

The Berlin girls ran well as a team Tuesday, sweeping Platt and Plainville. The Redcoats ended up taking places first through 11 overall.

"We went into this race treating it as a training run and focusing on running together as a pack," Berlin coach Steve Soucy said. "We planned on running the first 2.5 miles steady and then picking it up in the last half a mile or so.

"They followed the plan and proved that they are getting stronger heading into the second half of the season.  We had a hard practice the day before the meet and were still able to put up good numbers even while holding back during the first part of the race.

The overall winner of the race was Kaylene Sylvain (21:43) followed by Brittany Sullivan (21:50). Both put up times that would have been close to their season best a year ago. Nicole Grieco, Nicki Sylvain, Taylor Lupini, Paige Young and Alex Carbonell rounded out our first seven.

Junior Lindsey Stefens put in her best time of the year running 23:08.

The girls will be running in the Championship Race Saturday at the Wickham Invitational.

Boys:
Berlin 16, Platt 45
Plainville 23, Berlin 33

The boys split today's meet with Platt and Plainville. Berlin beat Platt and lost to Plainville.

"We knew coming into the meet that we would have to run our best team time and hope for the best as Plainville has a strong team this year.  We were able to take 42 seconds off our season-best team time but it still wasn't enough as Plainville went 1,2,3 on us. Our core six all ran well today with each of them going under 20:00 and four of them going under 19:00."

Brendan McLarty, James Dwyer, Matt Kall and Will Cavedon placed top seven overall in the race and put in a great effort.

The boys will be running in the Wickham Invitational this weekend as well.

Berlin wraps up the regular season next Tuesday at Middletown.
