Board of Education Will Seek One More Member

After just two candidates ran for three openings.

Sometime in the next few days, the Berlin Board of Education will send out a press release asking for volunteers from town to fill an opening on the Board for the next year.

Each year, the nine-member board has three openings up for grabs. This year with three openings, just two candidates decided to run. Incumbent Irene Matulis and newcomer Tim Oakes were elected. Another citizen took out the paper work to get his name on the ballot but job and personal demands would not allow him to run.

The board has had to go through this process before but not for the same reason. In the past, board members have taken leaves of absence or had to leave the board for a variety of reasons. The board then interviews residents who are interested in the position and select one. The same process will be used this time around.

In the past, BOE President Gary Brochu said volunteering for this position provides a great starting point for the prospective board member.

"This is a great way for people to get started in community service because it is a shorter term and they can kind of learn the ropes without a huge commitment," Brochu has previously said.
