Berlin Schools to Destroy Class of 2007 Records

If you graduated in 2007, and you want some of your old records from high school, then you should contact the Board of Education office.

The Board of Education will be destroying next month confidential records pertaining to students from the Class of 2007.

Berlin Public Schools does not retain records six years following a student’s graduation, and unless a student wants to claim old confidential records then the district shreds them.

The documents will be destroyed on July 31, 2013.

Everything is spelled out in this notice posted on Berlin Patch by Board of Education staff member Joann Walicki, but here are the finer points:

  • Confidential records record students' special education testing and program; these are not regular school records.
  • Pursuant to these procedures, the confidential records of students who were, at any time, members of the graduating class of 2007 will be destroyed on July 31, 2013.
  • Students have the right to inspect their records prior to destruction. Upon receipt of a written request, an appointment will be made.
  • If desired, a copy can also be made available to the student.
  • This does not include students' high school cumulative files.
  • Former students or their parents should send written requests to the Director of Pupil Personnel Services, Berlin Public Schools, 238 Kensington Road, Berlin, CT 06037, "only if the student had a special education file."
