Berlin Resident Dan Lee Named Cheshire Teacher of the Year

Cheshire High School's basketball coach Dan Lee named 2012 Teacher of the Year

It has been quite a last 10 days for the Lee family of Berlin. After a successful week of celebrating the life of Ryan Lee with a mini-golf tournament, a 3-on-3 basketball tournament and the second annual Ryan Lee Golf Classic, Dan Lee received a huge honor.

Cheshire High School Basketball and Golf Coach Dan Lee was honored by his peers Friday at the school district's convocation held before the first day of school on Monday.

Lee, whose 19-year-old son Ryan, was killed in April after being hit by a car in Brooklyn, said during his acceptance speech that the Cheshire school community stepped up when he needed it the most.

Superintendent Greg Florio said the room was full of heroes "but there is one superhero here and his name is Dan Lee."

Lee was introduced by 2011 Teacher of the Year, English Department Chair Megumi Yamamoto. "He is calm, serene and contemplative," she said. "I have deep respect for him as a collegue. He has taught for 16 years in Cheshire (all at the high school). His hobbies are sports and home improvement," Yamamoto said.

The district's three new administrators were also introduced: Marlene Silano; assistant principal at Highland Elementary School, Chris Brown; director of pupil personnel services and Ann Donnery, principal of Darcey School.

School begins Monday in Cheshire and students will take their first vacation the following Monday for Labor Day.
