Berlin Middle Schooler Alexa Kavarsky Recognized For Civics Essay

Winners Join State Rep. Joe Aresimowicz at State Capitol

House Majority Leader Joe Aresimowicz, who represents Berlin and Southington in the Connecticut General Assembly, recognized two students for participating in an essay contest sponsored by the state lawmaker.

Students were asked to submit essays describing their proposal for a new law or changes to a current law. Rep. Aresimowicz invited the writers of the top entries to the State Capitol in Hartford for lunch and a private tour of the Capitol.

Southington’s Mark Murdy, who will be in ninth grade at Southington High School this fall, and Alexa “Lexi” Kavarsky from Berlin, who is entering eighth grade at McGee Middle School, along with their families were at the Capitol this week. Mark and Lexi were presented with official citations from the General Assembly, with all the essay participants receiving congratulatory letters earlier this year.

“Close to 70 students submitted essays and I was amazed by the variety of issues these young people cared about. This contest was a great way to engage students and help them understand that here in the United States everyone has a voice and can make a difference,” said Rep. Aresimowicz.
