Rep. Cathy Abercrombie Moves Up The Ranks Of State Legislature

State Rep will serve as House Chair of Human Services.

State Representative Cathy Abercrombie (D-Meriden/Berlin) has been tapped by Speaker of the House Brendan Sharkey (D-Hamden) to serve as House Chair of the Human Services Committee and Vice Chair of the Human Services Sub-Committee of the powerful Appropriations Committee.

“I am delighted to have been asked to serve in this new role this upcoming legislative session," Rep. Abercrombie said. "There is so much work to be done and unfortunately, the difficult fiscal environment that we are dealing with will challenge us to do more with less. I am ready and willing to work diligently and do everything possible on behalf of our constituents to preserve vital social services and programs."

The Human Services Committee oversees all matters relating to the Departments of Social Services and Children and Families, the Offices of Child Day Care and Protection and Advocacy for Persons with Disabilities, the Commission on the Deaf and the Hearing Impaired, and the Board of Education and Services for the Blind.

"Cathy Abercrombie is a proven human services champion. In particular, her tireless work on behalf of people with Autism has been exemplary," Speaker Sharkey said. "I am confident she will bring that same dedication and commitment as chair of our Human Services Committee."

Cathy Abercrombie, who was sworn in Wednesday as the General Assembly convened the 2013 Regular session, will also serve on the Insurance and Real State Committee.
