Rep. Aresimowicz Votes To Help Families Navigate College Financial Aid Process

Having just gone through the process, Aresimowicz feels parents frustration.

House Majority Leader Joe Aresimowicz (D-Berlin/Southington) announced that legislation to help families navigate the college financial aid process was unanimously approved today by the state House of Representatives.

“With so many families struggling to pay for college and student loan debt skyrocketing, this bill just makes sense,” said Rep. Aresimowicz. “Having just gone through the finical aid process with my oldest son a few years ago, I understand how families are confused by the fine print and may not understand the real cost of college.”

The legislation (HB 5500) would require Connecticut colleges and universities to supply students with uniform financial aid information. The uniform reporting sheet was developed by the U.S. Department of Education and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau to help service members and veterans make informed decisions.

It requires universities to report the cost of attendance, the amount of financial aid and loans for which the student is eligible, and the net price to attend the institution.

The bill will now go to the State Senate for consideration.
