Update: McGee Emergency Shelter Will Close Until 8 a.m.

Middle School opened at 9 p.m. for residents without power, heat.

Mayor Adam Salina announced that for the second time in just three months, McGee Middle School opened as an emergency shelter. The shelter opened Saturday night at 9 p.m.

EMS Commander Matt Odishoo closed the shelter from midnight until 8 a.m., however, as the few resident who said they were in need, called and made other arrangements.

The last time it opened was for Hurricane Irene. This time for Winter Storm Alfred, which has knocked out power to a significant portion of Berlin.

Residents without power or heat can use the shelter to stay overnight and as needed in the coming days.

For emergencies, residents should still call 9-1-1. If residents have a problem and need help or a ride to the shelter, they can call the Berlin Police Dept. at (860) 828-7080 in the morning.
