Larson Letter Helps Clarify Post Office Rumors

Salina talked to Congresman on behalf of town.

As you are all well aware, there have been a number of rumors regarding the future of our community's Post Offices.

I would like to provide you with some information that should clarify the actions that the USPS is taking.  In an effort to reduce costs and remain solvent, the USPS is conducting what they call a "Delivery Unit Optimization Program."

What this means is that postal carriers will begin their day at the New Britain USPS rather than reporting to Berlin. I have been told that this change should be transparent to customers since it is only an internal move of the employees.  The Post Offices in Berlin and East Berlin will remain open.

There should be no change noticeable to our citizens.  All retail transactions such as certified mail, package pickup, etc as well as PO Boxes will remain in their current location.

As I had mentioned at a previous Council meeting, I did speak with Congressman Larson when I was in Washington regarding our concern.  He and his staff have been extremely supportive and helpful in voicing our concerns and providing me with answers.  Below, please find the attached letter from Congressman Larson.  I would like to thank him and Gladys Mercado in the Congressman's Hartford Office for their assistance in this matter.

Dear Mayor Salina,

I am writing you regarding the East Berlin, Kensington United States Postal Service site relocation. Subsequent to the last congressional briefing, our office has gained the following information on this matter.

The USPS will be moving approximately twenty carriers from the Kensington office located at 62 Kensington Road, Berlin CT, to the New Britain Post office located at 135 Chestnut Street, New Britain CT. They will also be moving one carrier from the East Berlin office located at 115 Main Street, East Berlin CT to the New Britain office. These moves will not affect customers as all retail transactions (certified mail, package pick up, etc.) and post boxes will remain at their current locations.

If you have any question, please contact Gladys Mercado in my Hartford Office at (860) 278-8888.

John B. Larson

Member of Congress
