Jeff Cugno Named To BOE

Attorney was one of five interested in position.

The Berlin Board of Education named Attorney Jeff Cugno to fill a one-year assignment.

Each year, three spots are open for the nine-person, non-partisan board. This year, only two candidates filled out the needed paperwork to be included on the ballot. That made for one open spot.

Five people contacted the BOE to show interest in the open position. They were all interviewed before the regular meeting Monday night. After deliberations, Cugno was selected and approved unanimously by the sitting BOE to fill the post. Town Manager Kate Wall will next swear him in.

"We were blessed to have five candidates and it was a pleasure meeting each one of them," Berlin BOE President Gary Brochu said before naming Cugno. "We had a great deal of discussion. We thought no matter who we picked, we could not make a wrong decision. I encourage all of you to stay in touch with the Berlin Board of Education because not only are we a non-partisan board but we have three openings every year. Next year we will have four openings. If you want to serve on the Board of Education, you don't have to wait long to get involved."
