Gun Owners' Names, Addresses Could Become Public

A West Haven lawmaker has introduced a bill to make public the names of some 170,000 gun owners in Connecticut.

If you own a gun in this state your name and address could become public under a bill introduced in the General Assembly by State Rep. Stephen D. Dargan, D-West Haven.

Dargan filed the proposal in response to the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown that killed 20 children and 6 women on Dec. 14. His proposal would overturn a law passed in Connecticut 20 years ago that keeps private the names and addresses of gun owners.

In an interview with the Hartford Courant, Dargan said he wants gun ownership information to fall under the state's Freedom of Information Act in part so that parents can know whether the parents of their child's friends have guns in their homes.

"Maybe their kids are going over to Johnny Smith's, and maybe they want to see whether they have guns in the house," he told the newspaper.

Dargan's proposal follows another bill that was filed recently that seeks to limit who can own gun ammunition in Connecticut and to keep such ammunition out of the hands of felons. Gun control issues are expected to dominate the General Assembly's winter session, which formally begins next week, in the wake of the Newtown massacre.

Adam Lanza, went to his mothers home and killed her, because he knew there were guns there and he wanted to take those guns and do something horrible. In response to this horrible crime, Mr. Dargan wants to let all future Adam Lanzas what homes they can go to if they are looking for guns they can't legally buy.

Fine with me! The criminals will leave me alone and go to the bleeding heart liberals home. If I were one of the homes that did not show up on that list I would be very nervous. I am a law abiding gun, gun owning citizen and have my firearms for hunting and home defense. I hope I never have to use a weapon in self defense but sleep well at night knowing I can protect my family. I just do not see the point in making it public information. When a Ct resident wants to purchase a firearm, he or she has to fill out the proper forms and submit to a background check. If he or she does not have a hunting license or pistol permit there is a 14 day waiting period. So what's the issue? Oh yeah, the criminals do not do this!!!!!

Dems' ideas and laws on gun control are NOT the answer! Who do you BLAME in Chicago for all the gun violence (not to mention the government incompetence, corruption and insurmountable DEBT)??
Perhaps the U.S. should pull out of Chicago? Body count: In the last six months 292 killed (murdered) in Chicago. 221 killed in Iraq AND ^^^ Chicago has one of the strictest gun laws in the entire US. ^^^ ^^ The leadership in Illinois - all Democrats. ^^ President: Barack Hussein Obama Senator: Dick Durbin House Representative: Jesse Jackson Jr. Governor: Pat Quinn House leader: Mike Madigan Atty. Gen.: Lisa Madigan (daughter of Mike) Mayor: Rahm Emanuel Thank you for the combat zone in Chicago. Of course, they're all blaming each other. Can't blame Republicans; there aren't any! Chicago school system rated one of the worst in the country. Can't blame Republicans; there aren't any! State pension fund $78 Billion in debt, worst in country. Can't blame Republicans; there aren't any! Cook County ( Chicago ) sales tax 10.25% highest in country. Can't blame Republicans; there aren't any! This is the political culture that Obama comes from in Illinois. And he, and Malloy, are going to 'fix' "gun violence," and politics for us???

I believe there is a major misconception here. The list would only show people which have pistol permits, which enables them to CARRY a pistol. One does not have to have a permit to have a gun in ones home.
Ed Froem January 5, 2013 at 10:00 pm
There's no misconception, its just a democrat maneuver to paint anyone who has a permit and is therefor a potential gun owner as a potential threat. One of our wonderful talking heads on tv was equivocating permit holders with pedophiles.

Berlin teachers' median annual salary is nearly $80,000, plus family medical benefits costing overRead More $20,000, plus the ability to retire at 55 years of age with summers off, winter and spring vacations, and virtually ever holiday known to man and woman, and a work day at the high school ending mid afternoon: not bad. Bill, you are correct on the motor vehicle laws an what should happen to drivers who break it.Read More There is also no law that people should eat food, but if they don't they will die.

Bill, pushed wrong button an send comment off before I was finished. My point is everyone has toRead More use common sense in all situations an that includes parents on teaching there children as well as motorists. There will always be motorists who disobey the law an that is why parents must teach there kids about how to be safe an sound an not just say well there are laws on that. Make kids aware that accidents can happen an motorists speed an just be careful.
William Brighenti June 10, 2013 at 02:50 pm
Of course. But drivers need to obey the laws. If they don't, enforce the laws and make them payRead More the consequences of their actions: fines and civil lawsuits and higher insurance rates; loss of license;, prison for hitting a child.

ok, first i would like to apologize for going a little nuts, i was a little worked up last night.Read More again, i apologize. but i dont believe i called you any names, i did however refer to the word assume, which you did when you said people like me speed. one speeding ticket in 13 years of driving (when i was younger). and you are correct, loving family and children are values i have, thats why i try to take the responsibility of protecting them, and not leaving their protection up to someone else (speeders in this case). but i guess that liberals/sheep, wouldnt know about that, wanting and thinking that the govt or someone else will be there to protect them. like i said in the other comment section, dont rely on others for your or others safety, rely on yourself.
