The Lillian Bolin Special Needs Registry Serves Berlin

Her daughter comes to Berlin Police Dept. for a tour.

Lillian Bolin tragically lost her life in a house fire in March of 2009. In 2010, The Lillian Bolin Special Needs Registry was created by Officer David Cruickshank to provide emergency responders with more information about residents in town with special needs in the event of an emergency. In December of 2012, Nancy J. Smith, daughter of Lillian Bolin, stopped by the Berlin Police Department to meet Officer Cruickshank and to tour the department.

Officer Cruickshank had the opportunity to give Mrs. Smith an update on the Special Needs Registry since it first was created. There are currently 82 people registered. Hopefully, the “100 Registered” mark will be met early this year. Ages for registration range from 5 years of age to 99. Fourteen of those registered have critical power concerns and are currently registered and directly managed by Connecticut Light and Power to ensure that their life support systems remain operational should there be a loss of power.

The registry has proven to be invaluable in times of disaster or uncertainty in our Town. The registry was instrumental in assisting Town emergency services to identify citizens that may need assistance during Hurricane Sandy and to ensure their safety.

We would like to thank everyone for their support of the program. The registry would not be as successful as it continues to be without everyone’s heartfelt, passionate guidance. Here’s to another great year!
