State Police Arrest Kensington Man In Shooting Incident

Alleged shooter charged with three counts of criminal attempt to commit murder.

The Connecticut State Police Central District Major Crime Squad served an arrest warrant on Jeffrey Yeaw, 45, of 18 Peck Street, Kensington in New Britain Superior Court today.

Yeaw was charged with: Criminal Attempt to Commit Murder (three counts); Criminal Attempt to Commit Assault First (three counts); Reckless Endangerment First (three counts); Criminal Attempt to Commit Assault on Pubic Safety Personnel (three counts); Unlawful Discharge of a Firearm; Interfering with an Officer; Unlawful Restraint Second degree; and Disorderly Conduct. He was arraigned and held on a $1,000.000 bond. He was remanded to the custody of the Connecticut State Department of Corrections.

At approximately 10:35 p.m. on Thursday March 8, 2012 the Berlin Police Department responded to a report of an assault at 18 Peck Street in Kensington.

Officers arrived and spoke with a male complainant outside the house who advised that he had been assaulted by a male family member who was still inside the house.

Officers entered the house in an attempt to locate the suspect who had active warrants for his arrest from CSP Troops C and D. In the course of searching the house, the suspect opened fire on the officers with a handgun.

Sergeant Mark Soneson, a 27-year veteran of the department, returned fire hitting the suspect. The suspect, later identified as Yeaw, was transported by ambulance to Hartford Hospital in critical condition. Yeaw survived and is recovering from his injuries. No Berlin Police officers were hit.

At the request of the Berlin Police Chief Paul Fitzgerald and the New Britain State's Attorney Office, the Connecticut State Police Central District Major Crime Squad Detectives conducted the investigation into the shooting. State Police Detectives processed and documented the scene, gathered physical and forensic evidence. State Police Detectives prepared the arrest warrant affidavit that was submitted to New Britain Superior Court for the arrest of the accused.

The accused Yeaw is currently incarcerated at Garner Correctional in Newtown.
