During the summer months of 2010, the Ragged Mountain Preserve open space and recreation area was the target of weekly smash and grab car breaks of visitors. The larcenies committed all had the same manner of entry and it was suspected that the same suspects were involved. Increased patrols and surveillances were conducted and new information was developed to identify a suspect vehicle.
Officer Hertzler was assigned to work the investigation and got a break in the case after the perpetrators used credit cards and identification, from one of the victims, to commit credit card fraud and to cash stolen checks. Officer Hertzler identified a suspect and conducted an interview that ultimately stopped the larcenies from that day forward.
Officer Hertzler continued his investigation for nearly nine months, conducting untold follow-ups including, visiting suspects in prison, at half-way houses and other locations, to obtain statements. His determination solved twelve cases and resulted in the Plainville Police Department also solving open larceny cases attributed to the same suspects in their jurisdiction.
Office Hertzler’s investigation culminated in the arrest and conviction of three drug dependent suspects encompassing 236 charges and stopping a drug fueled larceny spree. Officer Hertzler’s effort in seeing this case to a successful conclusion showed an exemplary level of pride and perseverance.
In recognition of his performance of duties in this case, Officer Barry Hertzler is awarded the Department Service Award.
