Man Who Fired at Three Berlin Cops Found Guilty at Trial

Kensington resident Jeffrey Yeaw could face prison time for attempted assault.

A jury found Kensington resident Jeffrey Yeaw guilty of multiple attempted assault charges this week for firing a gun at three Berlin police officers who had responded to a 911 call.

Yeaw, 46, was found guilty of three counts of attempted assault and three counts of assault on a public safety officer during a trial at New Britain Superior Court, the clerk's office confirmed. The Hartford Courant reported that six jurors listened to testimony at the trial, which lasted three days.

The New Britain clerk's office said Yeaw is scheduled for sentencing on Sept. 27. It's unclear what penalty he faces, however he could be subjected to some jail time.

Yeaw was arrested in March 2012 after Berlin officers responded to his 18 Peck St. home following a report of an assault.

Police encountered a man outside who said he was assaulted by a man still in the home, and when the three officers entered the premises they encountered Yeaw while doing a search of the property, police said.

The suspect then fired a handgun on the three officers and Sgt. Mark Soneson fired back, striking Yeaw in his legs. Yeaw was taken to the hospital for injuries but later survived. None of the officers were injured.

The Courant reported that Yeaw was hit three times in both his shoulder and his leg.
