Busy Morning For Fire Departments

Life Star called for medical emergency and then all four departments battle pesky, smoky basement fire.

It was a busy morning for volunteer firefighters in town on Fourth of July.

First at approximately 11 a.m., Life Star was called to transport a person with a medical emergency. There were few details available but according to reports, a person became ill or injured at approximately 11 a.m. near St. Paul Church. The person was reportedly taken to Hartford Hospital via Life Star. That was all that was known as of this afternoon.

Then at 1:30, firefighters were called to Glenbrook Road in Kensington, near Griswold School for a fire.

All four departments were dispatched to the fire.

"It looks like an electrical fire and the source looks pretty clear at this point," Deputy Fire Marshal Matt Odishoo said. "You can see from the source here, it is pretty charred."

Kensington Fire Chief Mark Lewandowski said that when his squad pulled up on scene they thought it might be a chimney fire because it was close to the chimney. It was also close to the source of electricity to the house.

"We wanted to make sure it was not a chimney fire first and then once we did that, we went to the next source, which was an electrical fire," Lewandowski said. "It was pretty murky down there. A water pipe broke and was pouring on the fire so it made it very smoky."

The damage was contained to the basement.
