Over the past few days someone has been scamming the community. The scam happens over the phone. If you or your friends or relatives receive a phone call and the caller says that a relative is in jail, needs money for bail, and asks you to wire the money, it's most likely a scam. This has happened recently in Berlin.

If you receive one of these calls please do not send any money. Call the Berlin Police Department at (860) 828-7080 and make a formal complaint.

If you send money the chances of BPD recovering your money is slim to none, with the emphasis closer to none.

This is one old scam. I learned about this one time I went to http://www.callercenter.com to report a harassing telemarketer. Someone, a senior, reported a call she got purportedly from "nephew" asking for money to be wired to a location somewhere in Mexico. But the senior knew better. She asked the caller a lot of questions until the caller hung up.
