Berlin Police Officer Paul Germain Retires After 26 Years On Force

He was an 'exemplary officer' said Chief Fitzgerald.


Paul Germain, who has been an officer with the Berlin Police Department from February of 1987 to March of 2013, has retired.

"During the 26 years that he worked as a police officer, Germain has the distinct honor of never receiving a reprimand. His service to Berlin has been exemplary," Berlin Police Chief Paul Fitzgerald said.  

He has been awarded many awards for his dedicated service. In 1994 he was awarded the Chief’s Achievement Award for bringing a speedy recovery to a burglary investigation at St. Paul’s school. In 1998 Paul was again awarded the Chief’s Achievement Award for your persistence in a murder case which resulted in an arrest two years after the crime.

In the year 2000, Germain saved the life of a 76-year old woman who was stuck in a burning house. For his selfless actions, Germain was awarded a Life Saving Award. The same year, Paul was also awarded a Department Service Award for stopping three subjects and recovered over $1,000 in stolen property.

Germain has been a champion in the area of youth. He has been a DARE instructor as well as a mentor for new DARE instructors. He was the Youth Officer and for the past six years has been the School Resource Officer at Berlin High. He has volunteered extensively to help with the Upbeat Program, giving up countless hours of personal time to assist the group. He assisted in creating the DMV Teen Safe Driving Video, taught the Driver’s Ed Parent “Law” Class and volunteered to help with the Special Olympics.

"Paul was a distinguished representative of the Berlin Police Department while he served on the Honor Guard," Fitzgerald said. "He was a positive presence in the community and participated in the Bike Patrol during his time off as the Student Resource Officer each summer."
