A black bear was seen in the area of Willard Avenue.

Newington police are alerting area residents that a black bear was spotted around the center of town Tuesday.

Around 3:20 pm, residents began calling the Newington Police Department reporting that the bear was seen roaming around Willard Avenue by Harding Avenue.

Officers arrived on scene and tracked the bear through the backyards of Harding Avenue where it eventually made it to the wooded area on the east side of Main Street, police said in a news release.

The bear did not demonstrate any aggressive behavior and was not in the company of any cubs.

The state Department of Environmental Protection was notified of the sighting.

Police said any residents who come in contact with a bear should not approach the animal and instead notify the Newington Police at (860) 666-8445.
