Happy Midwinter Spring!

Midwinter spring is here!

All day yesterday I had two things resonating in my mind — T. S. Eliot's poem "Little Gidding" and David Gray's "Coming Down." This was all brought on by the warmer temperatures — in (relative) stark relief to last week's — coupled with the tempestuous weather.

"Little Gidding" is one of Eliot's "Four Quartets" so named because Eliot thought poetry resembled music. I am posting the first few lines from the first section here.

Midwinter spring is its own season
Sempiternal though sodden towards sundown,
Suspended in time, between pole and tropic.

You can read "Little Gidding" in its entirety by clicking on this link below. I do hope you find it most fitting to read at this time of year.

On to David Gray's "Coming Down" and why that was playing in my mind all day yesterday as well...

I love how the entire song is so evocative of this time of year. Love, too, how it interweaves the references to the wintry weather and to memories of relationships past. Perfect listening for a midwinter spring evening, no?

All the best,

P.S. I went through a long David Gray period in the mid-1990s where I listened to his album Flesh pretty much nonstop. Love the heavy Welsh accent — adds to the ambient nature of the song, don't you agree?
