Adore is So Much Stronger a Word Than Love

A lesson for the heart.

They seemed a fairly innocuous couple. Older, nondescript. He was entirely unimpressive, if I am honest. Not overly-handsome. Not witty. Not, well, anything. And then he spoke.

"Lea, is there a word stronger than love?"

"Stronger than love?"

"Yes, stronger than love."

"Well, let me see...there is adore."

"Oh yes. Adore. Yes! Use that in the ceremony. Adore. That's how I feel about her. I adore her."

And there I sat, once again absolutely and honestly taken aback and silently kicking myself that I should never have judged this man...or anyone else. I have to hand it to him: he certainly did surprise me. I wouldn't have thought that that type of guy would be so utterly romantic. And yet, there he was, sitting in my living room asking me to use the word adore rather than love in his wedding ceremony as it is so much stronger than love and is more given to the way he feels.

And as they both went on to tell me that neither thought they would ever get married again or find anyone ever again and that both have veritably given up on love, Van Morrison's live CD "A Night in San Francisco" began playing in my mind. Yes, they had forgotten that love existed. It was trouble in their minds. And now here they were, planning for their very own little miracle.

I was so impressed with them as a couple, him in particular.  It wasn't that they were the most beautiful couple or the wealthiest or any of the extraneous things that we all seem to dwell on nowadays. No, I was impressed that this nondescript man got it right: all a woman wants really is to be adored. And so few ever are. Stunning in its simplicity when you think of it. And really as simple as that.

All the best on this late winter afternoon,

Lea
