Jortner: 'Mudslinging' Not Endorsed by Democrats

In a letter to Berlin Patch, Democratic Town Committee Chairman Fred Joytner said the committee does not support, endorse or otherwise

If there is one thing concerning the Berlin Democratic Town Committee these days, it's online blogs and comments that may put the party in a negative light.

Berlin Democratic Town Committee Chairman Fred Jortner said Thursday that the party has seen people pointing fingers over criticism of Theresa Tonina, Republican candidate for Town Council. The party, however, and it's members have not supported, endorsed or otherwise been part of the comments, he said.

Jortner sent the following to Berlin Patch on Thursday for publication on behalf of the committee:

As the Chairman of the Democratic Town Committee, and speaking on behalf of our candidates, we do not endorse or will not engage in anonymous on-line blogs.

In our opinion, they are not the least bit constructive, and distract attention from the real issues facing the community. I am from the old school, when you wrote an opinion letter to a newspaper, you signed your name and stood behind your remarks.

We live in a free society, and anyone who is a registered voter has the right to run for public office. Ultimately, it will be up to the voters to decide who is most fit to hold that office.

Our message has been, and will continue to be that we have a ten year record of success, that includes investment in our schools and infrastructure, grand list growth, open space acquisition, support for our seniors and veterans, and financial stability. Our pledge to the voters is to build on that success and insure a bright future for Berlin.

-Fred Jortner
